Tamassee DAR School To Become The Site Of Patriot's Memorial Amphitheatre & Outdoor Drama

The quiet, restful foothills community of Tamassee is slated to become one of South Carolina's very first, outdoor drama sites beginning in 2012. The Tamassee DAR School Trustees gave approval at the January meeting to allow the Task Force Patriot veteran's organization, based in Lilburn, GA, to begin fund raising activities for the project. The amphitheatre site will become a Patriot's Memorial to the men and women who served in the U.S. military in all wars, beginning with the war for independence. The school was founded in 1919 on a site where the Cherokees lived peacefully. The 880 acre campus possesses the same tranquil, unspoiled beauty that it had for the early settlers of the community. Legend says it was the home of a magical and powerful Cherokee fire prophet who possessed vast wisdom and healing powers. His influence was far-reaching; people came great distances to ask difficult questions and to be made strong and healthy. The nearby knoll where the prophet's grave lay was called Tamassee, meaning “The Place of the Sunlight of God”. The need to construct an outdoor drama site was the vision of H. Dean Bare, CEO of Tamassee DAR School. He shared the idea with Jim Freeman, Founder of Task Force Patriot, who developed it into a conceptual design and workable plan. According to Freeman, Task Force Patriot has veteran contacts across America who are capable of funding the required construction cost of nearly $600,000. He is requesting that of the 27-million living American military veterans, who learn of the project, each contribute a minimum of $5.00 toward the amphitheatre construction. Upon completion, the amphitheatre will seat over 300 patrons in theatre type seating, and will accommodate the physically challenged. State of the art lighting and sound technology will be utilized in the facility design. Research has begun on the script “Tamassee”, for which a scriptwriter will soon be named. Proceeds from the performances will be used for the Children's Boarding Scholarship Fund of the school. This revenue will assist in bringing stability to lives of children, who reside at Tamassee from across the country. Summer workshops and conferences for drama, technicians and other skills are planned. Area schools and theatres are expected to render their assistance and support in making the amphitheatre an historic upstate South Carolina success story.
